Born 1970 in Siegen, Germany
Since the 80's, Boris Hoppek counts as one of Germany’s graffiti pioneers. By now he has emerged to be one of the most reknown international urban artists. Starting off in the streets, he consequently evolved his art to a multi-layered work including drawings, photography, sculptures and installations.
Despite of its beauty, pretended innocence and cartoon-like style, Boris Hoppek’s art is disturbing and kinky as the artist combines cuteness with the hideous. The viewer is drawn directly into a voyeuristic and political incorrect situation – most of the times reacting with a feeling of insecurity. The radicality of Hoppek’s subject matter stands in sharp contrast to the execution of the works themselves. What often looks fragile, lovable, cute or cuddly, is never meant for decoration or to be loved only.
For his project booth at Volta New York 2010 he will set up an interactive boxing gymn, tying in with his double-punch bag installation for Volta Basel last year, and to again confront the viewer with taboo-issues by telling stories about violence, racism, prostitution or pornography.
Boris Hoppek is amongst the most versatile artists at heliumcowboy artspace. Since 2004, the gallery has exhibited his work in four solo shows, group exhibitions as well as art fairs in Europe an USA. Lately his work was presented in "Apocalypse Wow" at MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Rome.
He lives and works in Barcelona, Spain
