Born 1973 in Bologna, Italy
Federico Solmi enters the artistic world coming from the outsider realm. His work revels this fact, not only for the themes he chooses (popular, iconoclastic with amusing twists), but also in his frank style with scratches, messy in character, with a Dadaist sensibility, even absurd at times.
Solmi’s works portrait in a cynic way the achievement of power and the influence of big enterprises on people’s life, creating a chaotic world ruled by absurdity. Cinematographic and television references influence his production, especially those ones associated to violence and sex which especially fascinate Solmi.
Federico Solmi has been awarded in 2009 by the Guggenheim Foundation of New York, with the John Simon Fellowship in the category audiovisual. His works have been exhibited in Museum such as Centre Pompidou, Paris, Drawing Centre, New York, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Madrid, National Centre for Contemporary Art Moscow, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome, Contemporary Art Centre, Rouboix, Victoria Memorial Museum of Calcutta, Australian Centre of Moving Arts. Solmi’s videos will be featured in the upcoming Santa Fe Biennal (June 2010), an exhibition curated by Sarah Lewis and Daniel Belasco.
