Joshua Callaghan

Born in Los Angeles, CA

Joshua Callaghan presents a monument to the American century, "The 100 Year Anniversary Commemorative Model-T Ford." Callaghan constructed a full-size sculptural representation of a Model-T, the iconic machine that, through the innovation of assembly line production, put the power of Manifest Destiny into the hands of everyman. This technological revolution essentially created the culture of auto-based civic planning and the nightmare of suburban sprawl that most Americans today call home.

In the hundred years since the Model-T was first produced, America has created a road and highway infrastructure which dwarfs any other project in human history. We have become obedient servants to the cars and their habitat which we build, maintain, and timidly share. The cars have domesticated us.

To celebrate the 100 Anniversary of these events, Joshua Callaghan, constructed a vehicle out of Victorian style domestic objects, lamps and furniture. The primary material will be brass and brass plated faux antiques, objects harken back to a simpler time of optimistic American expansion and prosperity. Callaghan's Model-T folds the suburban decor back into itself, forming a gaudy spectacle, a trophy to things gone terribly wrong.
