 Born 1959 in Brownsville, Texas.
An installation of paintings, and applied artwork will be launched at Volta New York, a worldwide and substantial platform of concepts. Beginning his career young gives the artist the opportunity to be recognized early on and eventually be able to re-emerge with new endeavours in a new Century.
Ray Smith has built a very personal and painterly Magic Realism that also has grown into sculpture, working on old doors, wood panels, canvas, paper, polymers and bronze. The emphasis on syncretism is not evident but it is the structure of the work. Becoming aware of the electronic world tickled me and I began to alter my paintings and drawings through the computer, then painted them, and eventually altering them as well.
Isolated paintings work, but time-speed, space conflicts and nature, create a heartfelt anxiety that the installation reveals with an even deeper intensity and through re-emerging myths on space and time.
