The works of Stephan Melzl demonstrate in an exemplary manner the power of the picture to transcend rational thinking. In order to present emotional states and inner fantasies, he constructs seemingly real worlds of peculiar melancholy and simultaneously humorous wit. The contradictory feelings his pictures evoke founder on the substance of one’s inherent incongruity, and scarcely anything in his paintings seems to be certain or sure. They relate a fragmented, ambivalent state in which external and internal reality is transcended.
